How to Save a Life

Suicide is the third leading cause of death for people aged 15-24 (teensuicide.us).
According to the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL):
  • 19.3 percent of high school students have seriously considered killing themselves.
  • 14.5 percent of high school students made actual plans for committing suicide,
  • 900,000 youth planned their suicides during an episode of major depression.
Think about characters in the play who have either threatened suicide or completed a suicide attempt.  What causes people to consider, attempt and/or complete suicide?  What are your feelings about the action?  How might others perceive the act?  What are the ultimate consequences and the impact of suicide?

To prevent suicide it is important to show you care by:
  • being attentive
  • listening
  • being supportive
  • notifying those who can provide immediate help

Portia, Brutus' wife had committed suicide after she heard of Caesar's murder. She knew Brutus was part of it, he had told her about the enterprise. She also stabbed herself in the thigh to prove her loyalty to Brutus when he would not tell her why he was being secretive. After hearing of Caesar's death, she was overwhelmed with the stress of what could happen to Brutus or herself in the aftermath, so she killed herself in a final act to run away from a problem she did not want to face.

Like Portia, most people consider suicide when they become surrounded by an environment that is too much for them to handle. They are put in a position where they simply choose not to handle the situations life throws at them because they are frightened of two things: what will go on during the situation itself and what will happen afterward. They are completely fed up with how their life is going and see ending it as the only option.

I feel that the act of suicide itself is an act on impulse. I think that it is done with the feelings of hopelessness and loneliness, which everyone has felt before at least once in their life. I have no way of knowing what the mind of a suicide victim looks like, but I can only imagine how dark it is. What kind of things could they have gone through that would make them want to end their lives? Did they grow up with domestic abuse in their family? Were they constantly bullied at school? Did they put themselves in a situation that they regret so much, they were completely ashamed of the decisions they made? I could never look down on someone who has committed suicide, but I cannot say I completely understand why they actually committed the act. Yes, they could have been through a lot of things that mentally or physically traumatized them, but there is always a way to get help to recover. Suicide should never be an option, not even as a last resort. I do not care how awful someone's life may seem because they have the power to change things. Suicide happens because most people do not realize they have that power.

Most people see suicide as the last cry for help that was answered too late. Others see it as a cry for attention, both negative and positive. The majority of people can be among someone who is considering suicide and will not notice, or they simply won't care. Some say suicide is a selfish act, because of the impact it leaves. When someone commits suicide, they are only thinking of how much pain they are in. If they actually kill themselves, the people who loved them, whether it be their parents or friends, are effected. It is obvious that the victim did not know he or she was loved, if he or she did, they would have sought comfort and help from them. Suicide is completely preventable, only if others are willing to let go of their ignorant opinions and simply listen to the hardships of others, and accept those individuals for who they are. This may sound played out, but the sole thing a person considering suicide needs is someone who cares for them.

As Ashley Roxas says, Portia, Brutus’ wife, committed suicide after long hours of deep depression. This depression was caused by the question of whether or not her husband was dead or alive. Portia kills herself because she cannot handle being uniformed. Portia stresses herself out with the thought of her love – her soul-mate – being dead.
Just like Portia, teenage students commit suicide because they feel like they have no control over their own lives and how events occur. Portia could not control not knowing where her husband was just like many teenage Americans cannot handle impending family situations.
I honestly believe that suicide is a tiny thought, in a person’s mind, that is acted upon just like Ms. Depalo said. Suicide is the intentional killing of oneself. In my opinion, suicide should never be the topic of conversation at school or any place else. Suicidal thoughts are the symptoms of America’s common disease – depression. Depression can be caused by stress and bullying. Bullying is the hugest contributor to the teenage suicide epidemic. Some teenagers may already have low self-esteem and bullying just makes it all worse. It is one thing to look in the mirror and not like what is seen but a totally different thing for someone to outwardly say that he/she does not like what is seen. When someone points out a flaw, it hits the heart much harder.
In schools, integrity and self esteem should be taught to prevent bullying which then causes suicide. Schools should make it known that all people should be treated equally no matter what sexual, gender, or racial creed. Many people believe that schools should also make it known that bullying will not be tolerated. However, if a student is bullied, telling a teacher or another figure of authority only makes the situation even worse. Why? Picture this: a bully gets sent to the principal’s office and gets a two week suspension for making a parody out of a student. The bully comes back from his suspension angry at his classmate that “snitched” on him. The bully sets out for revenge – making death threats to his classmates. After all this happens the classmate commits suicide because he cannot take the pressure anymore.
In my opinion, there is no answer for suicide because a person does not show his or her true feelings. While walking on the street, one sees people smile. But the person does not see the emotions that the fake smile conceals. That is the problem that America and other places are hit with when trying to stop the increase numbers of teenage suicides.

In William Shakespear's The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, Marcus Brutus' loyal wife, Portia, commits suicide on account of his absence. However, I do not agree with Ashley in that she did so because of the overwhelming circumstances surrounding her.

I believe that all of the necessary precautions to prevent suicide were not taken. No one was there to be attentive, to listen or be supportive of her, or to provide any immediate help to her, and so one can conclude that her extreme loneliness and lack of human interaction might have led her to believe there was no alternative.

I believe this is a major cause of suicide today as well. There are over 300 million people in the US alone, and yet, people still feel alone. On this basis, I feel that this utter loneliness is the cause of much depression and insecurities of young people and could, potentially, have been the true cause for Portia to give up on her life.

Basic ideas:

CASSIUS- fake, depressed but in control with an army so Ashley's ideas are wrong, Has talk and defends his reputation from Brutus (Brutus bullying) so Efe's wrong, and general is in constant communication so he's not lonely so Emma's wrong.

REASON OF DEPRESSION- people lack purpose, suicide is selfish because of the impact, and it's bad. when people realize a lack of purpose they get depressed/suicidal.

PREVENTION- Give back to the community, make other lives better. That's the self-imposed purpose to stop suicide.

Brutus’s wife, Portia is depressed, and first stabs her leg to show that she is trustworthy, then kills herself later in the play once she heard about Caesar’s murder. Since once she proved herself to her husband he told her than plan, so she knew her husband was part of it. She could not bear the stress from having her husband be considered a murder, so she killed herself to make the pain go away.

There are many reasons that people commit suicide. The biggest reason is that they don’t think there is any reason to live, they think it would be better for everyone if they weren’t here anymore. Someone who does commit suicide usually plans out their death over a period of time, it is not a heat of the moment thing usually. Teens have one of the highest suicide rates of all, and many teens suffer from depression as well. Teens feel that no one likes them, and they don’t want to be there anymore, they would rather die. Like teens, Portia also feels that if her husband is a murder she has no reason to live.
Like Efe said, teenagers could be compared to Portia. Like teens who think they can’t control their lives, Portia thinks the same thing, that since she is women she cannot control her life ever, there are always people saying that she can’t know or she doesn’t matter.

I think that people who commit suicide, are usually already depressed and one more thing pushes them over the top, and they feel as if they cannot deal with life anymore. Most people who do commit suicide don’t really want to die, but they feel as it will make their lives and others around them better. Most people who commit suicide just want someone to listen to them, to be there for them, and treat them they way they deserve. Portia probably just wanted to be treated as a person, not just as Brutus’ wife. She tried to show him that she could handle anything, by stabbing herself in the thigh. All she really wanted was for Brutus to open up to her, and acknowledge her.

In the play, The Tragedy of Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare analyzes the events leading up to Caesar’s death and the aftermath. Sadly the play briefly discusses Portia’s suicidal death. Ashley stated Portia was overwhelmed with the stress of what could happen to Brutus, and I agree that the overwhelming stress caused her to commit suicide. She was also struggling through depression and felt lonely because no one was there for support. Overall, Portia’s cause of death was because of her emotional struggles through out the play.

Portia’s death was not taken seriously throughout the play, and it is similar on how society is today towards suicide. Many teenagers through out the world suffer from suicidal thoughts and do not get the proper attention they need. Schools may have assemblies discussing the causes of suicidal death, and how it can be prevented, but they don’t realize you can not change the way one feels. Those who suffer from suicidal thoughts are those who feel unloved and lonely in society, just like Portia. They are also going through depression, and all they need is the proper attention, support, and to feel loved. Teenagers who have lack of support are those who commit suicide. This is because they have no one to tell them that everything is going to be okay, and help them throughout their struggles.

I feel that the rate of those who consider, and make plans to commit suicide is very high. Since the rate is so high, I believe that society is not doing enough to help those who try to commit suicide. I also feel that the signs of depression and suicidal thoughts should be taken more seriously. Unlike Portia, she showed signs of emotional pain, by stabbing herself in the leg. When Portia stabbed her leg, it showed signs of overwhelming stress leading to suicidal attempt. Brutus should have taken the stabbing more seriously. He could have helped her throughout her emotional struggles. Instead of focusing his attention on the conspirator’s plan, he could have been there for support. If Brutus was there for Portia, he would have prevented Portia from committing suicide.

Suicide can have a huge impact in society, especially if one kills themselves. This can cause a domino affect where friends and family can become depressed and emotionally unstably. Therefore, I believe that depression and suicide should be dealt more appropriately and cautiously in the world.

It is not surprising that suicide is the third leading cause of death for teens; it is almost an epidemic. In The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, two characters, Portia and Cassius are confronted with suicidal tendencies, while only one carries out the deed. The readers are introduced to Portia’s violent behavior in previous acts when she stabs her own leg, revealing the sacrifices she is willing to make for Brutus. Later on, when Brutus notes that Portia swallowed coal to kill herself, the reader is not surprised considering her loyalty to her husband. Portia is devastated by the conspiracy plot and the risk of her husband being killed, so she commits suicide. On the other hand, when Brutus and Cassius have it out with each other, Cassius feels like he is being attacked by Brutus. He offers Brutus his dagger to slay him, while complaining that he is no longer worthy of living since no one loves him or wants to be his friend, yet knowing full well that Brutus would never harm him.

Everyone who commits suicide has his/her own reasons that contribute to the death. Unless there is a note, no one can ascertain the cause behind the ultimate decision because the victim is not alive to explain the reason; suicide is a permanent action that cannot be undone, unlike accidental injury that can be treated by surgeries or time. In Portia’s situation and Cassius’ scenario, each character’s esteem is very low; Portia is unable to handle the pending circumstances; it is too much for her to bear. Cassius’ mental state is characterized by depression and loneliness; he feels that no one believes in him.

Personally, I feel that suicide is a tragic way to end one’s life. I have never thought about it, for I believe there is absolutely no reason why someone’s life could be so terrible that a person would choose to end it. Moreover, suicide is a sin; only God should take a life. Everyone faces obstacles in life that seem prohibitive; our challenge is to conquer these problems and become better people thereafter. No one’s life is perfect, but suicide is not the answer; while killing yourself at first may show how strong you are by actually being able to commit the act, it also shows how weak you truly are in that you can’t live up to fixing your problems. For some people, death is the easy way out; it may appear to be a better choice in comparison to shabby living conditions or poor treatment.

liz butler said...

Other people think they are cool and commit stupid deeds or make poor choices; they feel they are invincible. Suicide can be brought on by people who don’t even realize it! Because kids want to fit in at parties, teenagers may binge drink, and if they repetitively drink every day, these actions may lead to alcoholism which may result in an unexpected fatality. Similarly, one wrong move and a person could overdose on drugs and be dead the next instant. Still others opt for a long term death sentence by deliberately choosing to contract aids, for instance.

While some people think that suicide victims are crazy people, I disagree. Various factors contribute to the taking of lives. Many people who commit suicide are victims of cyber-bullying or bullying in general, resulting in depression, rejection, hatred, and death. In truth, some people may be mentally unbalanced, emotionally unstable, or victims of abuse or addiction. People who commit suicide don’t realize that other people are affected by their actions. There is always someone who cares for you in the world, whether it is your family, friends, neighbors, teachers, coaches, or clergy. While these people may not always like you, they have an underlying concern for you that could never disappear. Certainly, God is always there when in need of help or comfort.

I agree with Efe when she says “While walking on the street, one sees people smile. But the person does not see the emotions that the fake smile conceals.” A lot of people can put up a good front, but unless you really know a person, you may assume nothing is wrong with him/her.

Portia, Brutus’s wife, took her own life shortly after the events of Caesar’s death. I would imagine that like Rachel said, she could not bear even the thought of her husband committing murder. Its is sad that she went as far as to stab her own leg to show her husband that he can trust her. Like what Efe said, Teenage Depression is a common killer that sprouts from depression an epidemic around the world, most commonly seen in Japan. Suicide sprouts from: bullying, rape, divorce, gender bias, domestic abuse, grades, death of a loved one, etc. People do it when the light at the end of the tunnel cannot be seen. When they feel that stress, heart ache, pain and suffering are at its peak. When nothing more can be done to stop this, they as Ashley said feel that life is just throwing more stuff at them and they can no longer take it.
People who are in depression often push others away. Letting their minds fall deeper into depression. They feel no one can understand them and that no one can help them. That they are stuck in a hole with no way out. Suicide is what happens at the end of a panic attack (whither they are hysterical or not.) Panic that you believe there is not way out.
Honestly at the end of the day, I believe suicide may end your problems, but it may start or worsen someone else’s. Most People who commit suicide don’t think, consider and/or even care about what happens afterward. People don’t realize that when someone commits suicide, it hurts their loved ones tenfold. This can start a cycle where one of their loved ones can commit suicide, and so on, and so on. So Inadvertently, YOU’RE KILLING SOMEONE ELSE.

As Charlotte said, it is sad that Portia had to go as far as to stab herself to show Brutus that he could be trusted. Being on the place that Portia was in was very stressful. Not only was she the wife of the leader of the conspirators, but she was also burdened by the fact that she knew about the plan that the conspirators were setting in motion. Commiting suicide was one of the ways that she thought she could use to get out of her horrible situation. Many circumstances could cause people to commit suicide. Being in a situation where it seems you have no control, feeling like your stuck in an inescapable rut or just simply being dissatisfied with your life in general could cause people to commit suicide. My feeling towards the topic of suicide are very touchy. I've had my grandfather on my fathers side commit suicide and at one point I was one of that 19.3 percent of high school students that was in the statistics Ms.Depalo gave us. I was not satisfied with my life at the time so I distanced myself from others, which only made everything worse. At some point I realized that suicide would be the easy way out and that doing it would deeply sadden the people that I would leave behind so I started to change my opinion about life. The perception that other people have about suicidal people vary. It's usually split between people who pity them or the others who think they are weak for trying to escape their situation.
rather then trying to solve it. The ultimate impact is not the point that a person took their life, but the fact that whatever predicament they were in was menacing enough to push them towards the option of suicide. Another effect of suicide is those who are left behind. If you killed yourself today how would your mom, dad, siblings, grandparents and friends feel?

Suicide is a very controversial issue and has become very prevalent within the past couple of years. Most teens that commit suicide or consider it only do it because they are at a point in their life where they believe they can't handle their lives and should just quit. People who want to commit suicide go through so much in thier life, like Tyler Clemnti, who was bullied and 'dragged out of the closet' in front of thousands if not millions of people. He saw no escape route from this humiliation other than the option to take his own life.

Personally, I believe that suicide is taking the easy way out of a situation that is humiliating and painful. Truthfully, a person who considers committing suicide believes that the world would be better without them and everyone elses' lives would be easier without him/her complicating or bothering other people. Like Charlotte mentioned, taking your own life inadvertently hurts others and might even cause others to be in so much pain that they decide to commit suicide as well. If we committ suicide, we wouldn't be around to see what happens on Earth after you leave the world, so we wouldn't see the pain that we've caused.

To prevent suicide I believe that you truly need a strong support system that can comprehend and just listen to what you have to say and your feelings, because even if others won't truly understand how you're feeling it is good to vent and get rid of bottled feelings. You need to surrounded by people who don't judge you based on this one thought to commit suicide or any other decisions that you've made. Another important factor to prevent suicide is to be around others who genuinely love you. Because people don't feel loved and feel like they have nobody to turn to, they feel like the only choice is to quit on their lives. So always be there for your friends and colleagues because you never know the situations they have to go through and at least once a day, try to tell someone that they are worth something to the world, because everyone is no matter what.

I agree with Ashley on the fact that suicide is an act on impulse because sometimes you hit rock bottom and you cant see the brighter side, but there should always be one somewhere over the big hurdle of life.

In Shakespeare's play, The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, Portia committs takes her own life after hearing that her husband, Brutus, killed Julius Caesar. Portia already portrayed self inflicting characteristics when she stabbed herself in the thigh to prove her loyalty to Brutus. Once she found out about the enterprise, she begins to worry and freak out about the consequences that Brutus and she would have to suffer after killing the leader whom everyone loved and admired. In my mind, I believe that she committed suicide because she was scared of what might happen to her family and what the community of Rome would think of her and her husband. So the only way to get out her predicament was to take her own life. Truthfully, I believe she was being too dramatic but I understand that she didn't want to deal with the consequences of being the wife of a murderer. All in all, suicide is a very sad and heartwrenching topic but so real, and effects millions of people, so always try to help out people no matter what.

In the play "The Tragedy of Julius Caesar" a lot of death occurs. Most of the deaths that happened were people being killed by another human being. One death was by suicide. Portia was the wife of Brutus. She killed herself by swallowing hot coals. Portia killed herself because she was so worried about her husbands safety. She was very insecure and decided to end her life.

People who consider suicide are not happy with their life. They think that life is so hard, there is no point in living anymore. I personally think that suicide is not the best option. People who are depressed need to see a doctor and get help. If they do not, they throw away their life which could have been a lot different if they had tried to stay strong through their period of depression. Suicide is also a very selfish act. Everyone in their life has someone who cares about them. Killing yourself will bring a lot of pain on other family members and friends and can even cause one of their suicides.

In the play, The Tragedy of Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare, Brutus' wife Portia commits suicide via hot coals because she is so worried about Brutus. In reality, suicide can be caused by various reasons. Many people consider, attempt, or even go through with suicide due to mental problems such as being bullied, the loss of a person or material things such as money (like bankruptcy), or simply too much stress. I disagree with Efe about how some people walk around with a smile but are really disturbed. I think that if a person was suicidal, they would not really care about their outward appearance towards people anymore.

I think suicide is probably the most outrageous thing you could do. Life is beautiful. Throwing away your most precious gift is ridiculous. I think even if you were at rock bottom, with no money or family or friends, you still should not commit suicide. You can still enjoy all that Earth has to offer, so there is no point in ending your own life. You could still always start from scratch and get money, find new friends, and basically undergo a rebirth, instead of a finale. I am sure others would agree with me that life is sacred and not to be destroyed. Also, suicide effects everyone close to the deceased. Brutus, even if he does not show it, is deeply affected by Portia's death, as shown by his strange visions and hallucinations. Suicide not only wrecks one person's life, but everyone who that person touched.

In The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, Portia and Brutus are talking to one another because Portia is very concerned about Brutus' "sickness." She said that she would stab herself in the thigh to show Brutus how much she cares, and she did. After hearing the news about Caesar's death, Portia eventually committed suicide and killed herself.

The main causes of committing suicide is depression. Many teens are overwhelmed, unhappy, sad, and depressed about whatever they are going through. Teens with several inner conflicts is another reason for the cause of suicide. People tend to keep their feelings in and just not speak about it. They feel like living is just not even worth it if they are going to feel this certain way.

I personally feel that anyone who is going through depression, inner conflicts, or even family conflicts should just at least make an attempt to see a psychiatrist or some sort of therapist. I think it's not healthy to bottle up your emotions because then you will become overwhelmed just like Portia did. Others that feel like committing suicide have a different mindset and views of everything. I also agree with Efe on how she says that there are people in the streets, halls, and such and all they do is put on a smile to act like nothing is wrong.

In the play, The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, Brutus' wife, Portia, committs suicide. She went through with this act by swallowing hot coal. Previously she had stabbed herself in the thigh to show Brutus that she is loyal to him and that anything that he does matters to her. Since she was able to do this to prove her loyalty to her own husband, she is able to do anything else, such as committing suicide. The reason for committing suicide was because she could not bare to see what Brutus was going to get himself into due to the conspiracy to kill Caesar. I think this because a wife would not have an easy train of thought after finding out that Rome is now after her husband for the murder of Caesar. I am pretty positive that no wife will be able to stand watching her husband being put through all of this misery.

In the play Portia has her reasons to committ suicide, while others now a days have different reasons. I know many people that constantly are going through problems on thier own. Not everyone is blessed enough to have someone always there for needed support. Also everyone deals with pain and problems differently. Some people may be able to talk about it with someone, writing about it in a journal, writing songs, and others may keep eveything bottled up inside. I am the type of person to keep everything bottled up inside. I never really liked to tell what was wrong with me or the things I have gone through in my life just because I never liked people feeling bad for me or pittying me. This method is not always the best because I have sometimes had a point where I exploded due to the fact that I just could not handle it anymore. This is the way I have always been and I think I will always stay like this. Some people may committ suicide because of family problems, they feel alone, no support, to much stress, and most importantly over love.

I think that suicide should never be a resolution to anything. I understand that people have their ups and downs, but who doesnt? At the moment suicide might be the only thing that comes to mind, but there is always someone out there that can help you change your mind. I think that anyone that is thinking about committing suicide should sit down and call the one person that makes them smile all the time. If that person is called, the results of a persons life will be changed. No longer will they committ suicide, but now they will have a million reasons to keep living.

In the result of committing suicide there are many people that will be affected. Most importantly, your family will be affected. Also friends will be affected. Not everyone is super close with their family, but putting everything aside the family will care about losing a family member. It would deeply sadden the closest people to you. Some people do not take losing a loved one correctly so that person may now be thinking about committing suicide themselves. In some cases this results in an ongoing circle.

I agree with Cesar. Suicide is an easy way out of problems. Its basically running away from anything that has or will hurt you. Problems are reacted to differently, but I do not think that suicide should be one of them. There may be several reasons to committ suicide, but there is always a million reasons to keep living.

Many people inflict pain on themselves before actually carrying out with the attempt at suicide. For example, as Sabrina said, Portia stabbed herself to show how concerned she was for her husband and how she would do anything for him. It is easy to understand that if the one you love is having a hard time that you would also care to know the feelings he/she is enduring. Although there are many more ways one could drastically do this other than harming him/herself. When something is so stressful that death is pondered, it is very difficult to try and change someone's mind. Just as Portia was so worried about the conditions of her Husband after he killed Caesar she decided to kill herself because she thought that he was in such danger she could no longer bare it.

Suicide or thoughts of it could be caused by family problems and feel blamed for them, depression, stress, and the overwhelming idea of school, their social status and life in general. Ways to prevent suicide could be medical or non-medical. The comfort of people that love you and care for your well being can always put a smile on your face. It is very easy to think back to the situations that put you down and make one feel suicidal, but when around people that want you to live it becomes easier to forget those thoughts.

I think that suicide is very drastic and not something to joke about. Sure everyone throws "I'm going to kill myself" around like it is nothing, but there are people in your presence that may actually think that about themselves. It is ironic because today my mom got a card in the mail thanking her for mourning the loss of her friend's child who ran in front of a truck. He was around our age and everyone thought that he was fine when one day he decided he could not live anymore. Other people may agree or disagree with what I think, but it is a very serious matter. Many people are afraid to die, but there are those few that are afraid to live another day. Suicide can tear families apart, cause depression on other people that do care about the suicidal person, and even suicide for others that think it is their fault that he/she killed him/herself. Just a smile can change someone's thought of their overall wellbeing and their mind.

During The Tragedy of Julius Caesar Brutus' wife Portia commits suicide merely because she was worried about Brutus' actions, and her way out of the worrying in her eyes was to commit suicide. Along with Charlotte I agree it is sad she went through with stabbing her own leg just to show her own husband how much she cares about him. Yeah it shows that she would do anything for Brutus because she truly loves him, but physically harming yourself to prove a point? I feel that is the most unnecessary thing you could do. To commit or attempt suicide you either are mentally unstable, or you feel your life is so terrible that is your last resort. Personally the thought of ending my own life is insane, yeah life sucks some times we all have our ups and downs but to kill yourself over something when times are rough? That shows you as a person do not have much mental strength or toughness. Others may look at suicide as if sometimes it has to be done some people's lives out there are so miserable that is what they have to resort to as sad and terrible as it is. From my perspective living through a family member who has committed suicide the consequences are forever lasting. People go about killing themselves with the thought that no one would care if they no longer existed, but when the action is done its almost as if that person rips a piece of your heart out along with them killing themselves. I feel the best word to describe committing suicide is selfishness because when you commit the act you bring everyone who cares about you right down with you.

Portia was a crazy woman right off the bat. She clearly had a mental problem. I do not know many people who would stab them self’s in the leg just to hear a secret. Then later on she then kills herself. She definitely has a mental disability, which causes her to have thoughts of suicide, or depression. Portia, being mentally distributed, should not of had killed herself. She should have had talked to a friend and see what she should do about Brutus. The thought of suicide came to her because she was alone, confused, depressed, and sad. Just think, if your husband was about to go kill one of your best friends, for I am sure that Portia met Caesar before. Even though Portia’s family was against him, she probably had compassion for him. Portia being so caught up in her problems just could not take to agony anymore and had a mental breakdown. She probably did not know what she was doing until it was too late. Cassius on the other hand was not having a mental breakdown, but was confused about what he was doing, when he offered Brutus his dagger to stab him. He was not thinking straight, for the same reason of having too many things to think about and being so caught up with himself.

Just like how Kristie said, most teenagers that commit suicide are at the point in their life where they believe they cannot handle their lives anymore should just quit. This is true in many cases but why are these kids feeling like this. How could you possibly think that your life is too much to handle, while there are other people in the world who are living each day on a loaf of bread. Teenagers that have thoughts of suicide have to relook at their lives and look at what they have that other people in the world do not have. I am not saying that being thankful would stop you from committing suicide, but it sure helps; it gives you that motivation to try harder at life, because life is tough.

I think what is the ultimate consequence of suicide is a dumb question; your life is over. There is no second chance at life, it is a one-time deal. It’s your one chance to show who you really are, and if you end it by jumping off a building, then you will never get that chance, and what good was your life? It would be a waste of God given talent.

In the play, The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, Brutus' wife, Portia, committs suicide. She did this by swallowing hot coals. She also previously stabbed herself in the thigh, just to show Brutus her level of committment. Many things can cause someone to commit suicide such as a recent trauamtic experience. But I believe that the main reason for suicide is chronic depression. Portia was depressed at the fact the her husband was not informing her of what was going on, and it came to a point when she could not handle the burden any longer. Numerous teens commit suicide because they are not happy, nor satisfied with the lives that they live. A lot of them want to be someone else, for the soul person of not being themselves. Other people might add to the idea of one committing suicide. If someone was constantly bullied or messed with, they see suicide as a quick fix, or an exit, But that is not always the case, especially looking at where one would end up. Suicide is a selfish act, because despite what that person might believe, there are people that probably care deeply about them, and killing themself would not do anyone any good. God does not like suicide because he is the one that gave you your life, and it is not your or anyone else's duty to take it away from you. I agree with Nancy in the sense that everyone has their ups and downs. It is not your choice on whether you have problems or not, but it is your choice on how you deal with them, and how you let it affect you.

An outsiders being people who harbor around a person who thinks/wants to commit suicide will never be able to get inside of the mind of that select person. One may choose to commit suicide for various reasons and like each person is different each individual who performs the act has a different reason behind doing so. Some of the obvious reason may be because they are tired of living, or they believe that it is the only option left for them. Contributing factors to these thoughts may be too much pressure, depression, hopelessness, and etc. I believe people between the ages of 15-24 have the highest suicide rates because throughout these age groups the common goals is growing up, and planning/sculpting out ones future. This group I think has the most pressure and demands placed on them because they constantly have to work hard, and compete for a common goal of studying and “nailing the great job”. These demands are mainly placed upon students in school whether it being college or high school. I agree with Sai when he says life is precious and beautiful, but I have to disagree with him where he says "You can still enjoy all that Earth has to offer, so there is no point in ending your own life. You could still always start from scratch and get money...” I think that this is a common mistake that we “outsiders” to suicidal people think. For the person who commits suicide I would have to think that they believe that they truly have done all they can do to be happy and the only escape is death. I believe that the most lethal weapon is not what others think or say of us, but what we think of ourselves. My feelings on the action are sympathetic and undeveloped for I cannot nearly try to understand how a person in such a situation feels therefore I try to be not judgmental, however much other like to immediately pass vague rulings. In play readers experience Portia's very disturbing means of taking her own life. I believe that the pressure of Brutus' plans to overthrow Caesar, and his untrustworthy actions could have caused her to feel the need to take her own life. Earlier in the story Portia is known for her "extreme" actions to show that she is trustworthy when she stabs herself in the leg. Also she may have wanted to continue to show that she is trustworthy by killing herself, therefore protecting Brutus if she were to be tortured or questioned about his motives or whereabouts.

Suicide is no laughing matter in todays world. We live in a world full of people that want to be something else and are not thankful for what they have or what they are. Therefore, they think about suicide. In my opinion I believe suicide is the dumbest, most selfish thing any person could possibly do. I honestly think that nobody's life can ever be bad enough to want to end your life. It is sick to think of doing such actions and most of the time people attempt or actually commit suicide are sick in the mind. People that commit suicide are people that are not happy with there lives and people that want more. I wish that I could be by everyone's side as soon as they thought of suicide so that I could show them how good their life actually is. Even thought others think that if they kill themselves it will solve all of their problems, they are wrong! In the play Julius Caesar, I think of one character that is crazy enough and actually kills herself. Brutus's wife Portia takes her life as soon as Brutus is gone and even earlier she stabs herself in the leg to show him that he can trust her in telling her a secret. I agree with Joe Pedo in that Portia was a very crazy character and she had a mental problem as all suicide thinkers do. She was not mentally stable and obviously needed help as does everyone that thinks or acts like her. The thing that people never think about or consider before committing suicide is the actual effect of it and who will be affected. I believe that people who commit suicide are very selfish because they don't think of everyone that they are leaving behind and everyone that will suffer from their loss. I hope people start to see why suicide is no alternative to solve all problems.

As you can tell by the statistics suicide has become a major problem in today's society, and the society of the past. With it being third leading cause for death in people aged 15-24 it's something that should be looked into more. For example when Portia commits suicide it makes you think was it necessary. The fact that Brutus was still alive, and unharmed shows how stupid commiting suicide can be. And I guess husbands don't fall far away from their wives, because then even Brutus threatens commiting suicide. In my eyes suicide is an escape for people going through serious times and depression. For example I know a kid that used to attend The Dalton School in Manhattan, and he commited suicide just, because he was so stressed out with school, and his social life. The fact that people could get that depressed that they'd actually want to take their life scares me, because I can't see myself ever being that depressed. I know I perceive suicide being an escape clutch, and I feel others feel the same it's how people are able to end their feelings of depression. Though like Olivia says it is hard for an outsider to try to grasp what the suicide victim's mind was going through. I don't think suicide victims realize how much commiting suicide may hurt their family and friends. I feel like whenever you hear of someone commiting suicide their is a clip of their mother right next to them balling her eyes out. I feel if people knew the negative impacts of suicide they wouldn't do it.

People consider the thought of suicide when they feel alone and no one cares about them. The major thought that occurs through peoples minds is that the world wouldnt be different if they lived or died. They all think about the idea that they wouldnt be forgotten. Sometimes broken homes and no friends can be lead to the idea of suicide and can actually be a main risk for someone being caught with this terrible tragedy. I have never experienced anyone go through the process of suicide but if someone started talking about the thought of doing so I would have done all I could to make sure they do not go through with the thought and stop it from coming up as a idea. Some others would be fine with it but I try my best to be the best I can and make sure nothing happens to that person.
