"Poetry is not a turning loose of emotion, but an escape from emotion; it is not the expression of personality, but an escape from personality. But, of course, only those who have personality and emotions know what it means to want to escape from these things." - T. S. Eliot

VENI, VIDI, VICI

Translated as, "I came, I saw, I conquered," this famous quote from Julius Caesar has been referenced and adopted by many, including the best rapper around: Jay-Z ("... with record sales and sold out concerts" - "Encore," The Black Album).

Using Alexander the Great as his inspiration and motivation, Caesar rose up through the ranks and became a popular, feared and powerful leader all at once.  Although criticized for his ambition, it was that very ambition that propelled him into his political position.  The question becomes: what is the value behind being ambitious?  Support your response with your view of the role ambition played in Caesar's rise to power, as well as using a modern day example to support your argument of whether or not ambition helps or hurts.

"A man without ambition is dead. A man with ambition but no love is dead. A man with ambition and love for his blessings here on earth is ever so alive. Having been alive, it won't be so hard in the end to lie down and rest." - Pearl Bailey

One must remember that Julius Caesar was born and rasied from a strict family. Every one single inched step out of line and he would be beaten. His family rasied him on ambition. Ambition is the desire to rise above your own current position. To be better than the rest. Caesar wanted more than just a polictal postion for money. He wanted to conqer, he wanted higher everytime he got higher. To suceed beyond all else.

Lets be real, Ambition is success. I see America as more of a country of Ambition rather than freedom. More people that come from other countries come to go to school here or get a job to have better condictions. Let us face the music, people come here with the ambition to do better, to STRIVE. Caesar might have saw life as: the higher you go, the more power you have, the more respect you get, the more you are feared, the better life becomes. Caesar may have liked the respect part the best.

Your parents have ambition for you to do well, to have a better life than them. If you have parents like mine, you will know that they want great and nothing less (Caesar's parents) of you or their will be trouble. It is quite difficult to live up your parents expectations and ambitions if you do not share them. This "Partner Ambition" will not work if you do not live up to them. Caesar would not have had such an empire if went beside himself and disobeyed as a young boy.

Life in itself is run on ambition, the will to do anything hardworking requires strong ambition. Caesar's ambition to rise in power ment tearing anyone apart in his way. Everyone in fear of him knew they had to be rid of him or he may eventally conqer everything and everyone. Those who fear your ambition will try and stop it. Vice Versa.
In "A Seperate Peace" by John Knowles. Gene feared that Finny might have been sabatoging his grades by helping him "waste his time" as a result Gene ended up damaging Finny's leg and he can no longer play sports. But Finny's ambition in sports lives on and he wants to pass it on to Gene. Gene is remorseful of the "accident" but does not share the "Partner Ambition" in Sports.

Ambition can Help you, but it can also destroy you and everyone around you. Gene and Julius Caesar should know.

Ambition equals determination and without determination, you will not move forward in life. It allows you to set goals for yourself and with it, you will reach those goals.

Caesar knew from a very young age that he wanted to be at the top, so like any practical person would do, he started from the bottom. He slowly worked his way up and took a few shortcuts in between. He reached his goal many years after he thought he would, but nevertheless, he still accomplished it.

Ambition is a very good quality to have - at an extent. At a good amount, ambition will lead you to great things. At an unnecessary amount, you could become blinded from your own ambition and it could cause you to go nowhere.

Being ambitious is not being afraid to push forward. Ambition is something that most people lack today, and is the reason for alot of being without jobs or education.

To be ambiitious you have to understand your goal, and be willing to put time and effort into that goal. Caesar understood what he wanted out of life, and did everything in his power to get there. From the beginning he showed his ambition even when he tried to take steps to build up his public speaking.

A modern day example of someone with ambition is Barack Obama. Even though the odds were against him,and alot of people didn't believe in him, he fought through and did what it took to reach his goal, and he was sucessful.

In today's society especially with people trying to bring others down it is important that you make your ambition even stronger not wither away as if it was never there.

Ceasar wanted to become the most powerful man in Rome. He didn't care how he got there so long as he got his hands on the prize. This ambition was very dangerous as it defies many of the common rules in Rome for to hold together the roman society. Ceasar disregarded these rule which led to chaos in his empire and the lack of discipline of his people. This blend of events caused by Ceasar's tampering could sure cause a collapse of the social organization.
Ceasar defiance of the traditions set in place by the government in the republic was the beginning to a slow erosion of the people. This new figure was functioning in a separate style than everyone else, making him a symbol for change. Ceasar campaigns for vote among the common people and lowering himself to obtain supporter. This new technique went against conventional method in Rome of only campaigning for the support of wealthy. Being a military commander, he endorsed violence and intimidation as the primary form of achieving objectives. One can see this in how Ceasar has citizens throw dung at his opposing consul or the military triumph he forces into existence to walk through Rome as a "hero."
Ceasar's ambition and lack of respect for traditions is reflected in the people he leads. His military army was composed of the most ruthless monsters that were a bunch of well trained thugs and rapists. One is to lead by example; Ceasar led his military units and a definite negative set of morals was established for the group. This concept does not just apply to the military. As a civilian leader his example would rub off on his people. This bribery, display of lack of restraint for married women, and will to make his own rules would make all Romans thugs. Since nothing is true law and everything is permitted, the people can do what they see fit. This mass mind set is nothing more than anarchy. This establish order, but it is not up held by the people's greatest inspiration and leader, Ceasar, so why should they follow the law either?
Vlad Lenin, just a teacher, thought it was a fantastic idea to create a utopia where everyone was treated the same. He set off immediately in creating his amazing new government that prized absolute equality. With a weak Czar, or king like political figure, ruling russia Lenin took an opportunity to establish this system solely created for equality. He never even stopped to consider how the system might be abused and obviously did not created safeguards against such problems. Lenin did not account for the fact that not all his successors would be so ambitious to follow his noble cause. His beliefs would only last as long as he was alive. This man's actions lead to the misery of an entire nation for more than half a century. This citizens' happiness snatched away and it can never ever be retrieved again.

Ambition is a hazard due to the fact that it is a driving force that can over loads one's senses. Comparing it to coffee, it works when administered in proper dosages. However, it is almost never used correctly and causes the user to become hyper active. The excessive energy is a distraction for all near the victim and himself or herself. Plus the supply of the coffee can become erratic. The absence of the coffee after a certain amount of time could lead to a general shut down of the specimen and cause it to be inefficient until its next fix of coffee. The people really need leaders with experience and a steady hand to guide them through the confusions of life. So there would have to be disagreement with tiffany when she has you have to have a bigger ambition than everyone else. She says that one will get knock over with little ambition. However the more ambition you have, the easier it is to get knock over. Anything made from ambition is made with haste, enthusiasm, and flaws. A stead put together case is solid; it will never have the chance to fall because it is fail proof. If one wants to succeed they need a solid structure, not just a solid foundation.

Ambition could be a dangerous thing if it is pushed too far. Caesar was raised from a young age in a higher class family. He was always being beaten for every mistake that he made no matter how insignificant. This made him ambitious to be good enough and to not make mistakes. His ambitions pushed him far as he become consul, high priest, governor and eventually a powerful general of his own army. He earns a triumph and receives the respect and fear of many people and politicians. In this instance ambition absolutely helped caesar; he rose through the ranks of politics and accomplished many things. But as I said before, if ambition is overdone it can be dangerous. The attitude that Caesar taught his soldiers to have ( as a result of his ambition) was one of blood lust and intimidation.

As dangerous as ambition could be, I view it as a necessary and very good characteristic to have. If James hetfield and the rest of the band Metallica did not have ambition, could they have become one of the most successful metal acts in the world? They most likely would not have. If they did not have ambition they probably would not have been able to stand living in a crowded van for months on end or sharing beds in old, broken down hotels.

Without ambition, people cannot hope to achieve their dreams. They may have determination, but without ambition it would be impossible to achieve anything because you wouldn't have the drive to do it. Even if some view it as bad or hurtful, ambition is a necessary evil. Without it where would the U.S or the world be?

Julian Stello said...

I have to agree with Tiffany when she says how people of today are lacking in the ambition department. Ambition to me is not ever giving up, pushing beyond your limits even though it hurts or gets tougher. If more people had a sense of ambition in their attitude our nation would be a much better place than it is at the moment.

The explantation of being ambitious sounds much easier than it actually is in reality. To be ambitious you have to set goals for your self and keep the state of mind that you will do everything in your power to achieve these goals no matter what the circumstances are. You can tell ambitious Caesar truly is by just the fact of how much time, effort, blood sweat and tears he took into becoming what he had his mind set upon all along. He would take journeys half way across the world just to work and fine tune the little things such as speaking so that he would be the best he possibly could be and he never let up for even a moment.

Although ambition somewhat has an addictive effect to it. It is a fantastic quality to have but if you are too ambitious it can hurt you rather than help you, ambition should only be used to an extent. Someone who I believe is fit for the title of being ambitious is Sarah Palin. Though I am not a huge fan of her she is as ambitious as it gets. Regardless of peoples opinions she does her thing and she works harder and harder to become as good a politician as she possibly can be. She's relentless in what she does from all the critics and all the challenges she had to face, she's worked hard to get where she is and if you like it or not everyone knows her name now.

Today being ambitious is one of the best qualities that you can possibly have. There are always people trying to put you down, your not good enough, you'll never reach this or that. You have to be ambitious, keep a steady head and just keep pushing along if you want to be successful working hard and keeping a steady mind is what life is all about.

Ambition is one of the main components that which pumps and shapes our lives. Without ambition one would have any aspirations to strive for. Ambition is the essence which separates successful people from just average people. However, ambition should never be the only tool in use when trying to achieve a goal. It shoud be accompied by good traits rather than one of the "7 deadly sins": for it is then that that ambition will turn corrupt. Take for example Caesar, a man led by his ambition and greed. His need for ambition mutated from something prosperous to something resembling a drug. Greed took over his ambition, turning it into something where he could not get enough of it. I agree with Nick copper about ambition being like coffee, except I think it is more extreme than coffee and more along the lines of a dangerous drug.He constantly needed more of it like an addictive drug. Caesar started killing and using many "under the table" advances in order to consume more titles, and gratifications. I believe that having ambition does help, but only in circumstances where its inhabitants use it wisely, purely, not in vain.

As ashley says in her comment ambition is what drives people to being succesful. Even though his ambition is what got him killed because of that same ambition Caeser led Rome to its greatest point in history. It is what put him above the name Alexander and is considered to be the greatest leader of that era. His ambition was the great success of Caesar's career and led Rome to a new empire. The ambition of say President Barack Obama was extremely determined. He was second runner next to Hilary Clinton and persued his goals with his ambition and became the Democratic choice and then beat out John McCain and became president of the Untied States

Emma Rodriguez said...

There is great value behind being ambitious, for, as Charlotte and few others previously stated, it leads to success. However, in addition to its power to help, it can also lead to hurt.

I do not believe that it is one's ambition itself that hurts, but what it is that one is ambitious for. For example, Julius Caesar's ambition led him to work hard and perform all means necessary to rise to the top. However, his desire to be at the top and to control all else led to the destruction of the Roman Republic and the loss of many traditions. Had his desire for power been purely to better the the lives of the people and better the Roman Republic, then his ambitions would have been of good nature and they would have led to good things. Unfortunately, this was not the case. Conclusively, ambition is all in all a good thing, because it is only indirectly the cause of these bad things - such as the rise of Julius Caesar - through the intentions behind the ambitions.

Today, anyone who is successful is ambitious. Whether it be the president of the United States, one's parents, or oneself, success in a career or schoolwork is representative of the ambitions one carries in order to succeed. One can only hope that those ambitions are lead by good intentions and are not set in the attitude of selfishness and cruelty.

Ambition is what everyone needs to succeed. Ambition is what seperates the Presidents of companies and bums on the street. I personally feel that everyone has ambition and goals but everything depends on how you use it! Many influential people who are ambitious and successful are Oprah, and Lil Wayne. They are both very important role models in my life, who came from nothing and made it in life.
Caesar was a very ambitious man he knew what he wanted and planned his whole life out and accomplished his dreams. I feel that even though Caesar was a greedy power hungry man you have to admire him, you have to admire how he rose to the top despite the obstacles in his way. Ambition is for the strong, for the people who wont stop working until they are on the top and then some.

I like Nick's coffee analogy to ambition. It just depends on how much you drink. IF you drink too much, you'll just choke and die. Same rules apply towards ambition. IF you don't limit yourself to more than what is required, you'll just end up living up to expectations and expectations. Is that what people want to live for? Just reaching goals and goals and goals? Are you never satisfied with what you have, and always want more? That is how war over land comes to place. People back in history would get so selfish over conquering land that they would end up living their lives defeating nations and killing innocent people for land. That is usually when it is enough coffee drinking and maybe start going into decaffe. Hehehe. But yeah, my point is that people just like Julius Caesar were too ambitious. Even though he sought out to retrieve what he wanted, he was very successful at it. It just depends on what the person's motives are that makes them ambitious.

At some point in everyone’s life, there is a desire or a dream hoping to be fulfilled. But what fuels the fire in order to achieve the goal? Motivation can be driven by competitiveness, a will to accomplish something meaningful, or a desire to jump on the bandwagon. Being an ambitious person means that you want to achieve something in your life for personal reasons regardless of others’ opinions.

Since Caesar was a boy, he
harbored ambitions to become more important than anyone else. Caesar used any means at hand to realize his ambitions, even turning to violence when necessary. While his tactics infuriated many people, he accomplished great deeds for the Roman Empire. However, his ambitions finally consumed him causing the Roman senators to turn on him and assassinate Caesar.

Eric Shanteau is an example of a contemporary person who lived for his ambitions. Even though he was diagnosed with cancer before the Olympic trials in 2008, this Olympian still competed and successfully represented the United States in competitive swimming at the Olympics in Beijing before undergoing treatment. Instead of readily undergoing treatment, he delayed his medical program; he worked harder than ever to compete and wouldn’t let anything interfere with his plans even if his health was compromised.

I agree with Olivia that “ambition is the essence which separates successful people from just average people.” I agree that ambition needs to be tempered with moral character. By combining an upright moral character with a healthy dose of ambition, one truly can be a successful person.

What is ambition? Well ambition is an eager or strong desire to achieve something, like fame or power. The word ambition has a very positive connotation. But what many people do not realize is that ambition is used for negative actions also. Some people may have the ambition to become the world’s highest drug dealer. Ambition is generally deemed as “good” but it depends on what the certain drive is.

In the case of Gaius Julius Caesar, he had the ambition to become the greatest conqueror in Europe since Alexander the Great. As Pearl Bailey says, “A man without ambition is dead.” Who knows where or what Caesar would have accomplished without the ambition he had? Although ambition is very essential to the living man, one has to know when he or she has accomplished his or her dream. That was the problem with Caesar; he spent all his life chasing a dream that he already achieved. As Olivia Taylor said, “Ambition is the essence which separates successful people from just average people.” I agree with her idea that ambition is the “line” that separates average Joe and Mr. President. But what happens when one has already achieved their goal. Caesar was elected Consul and was the High Priest in only one lifetime. People work hard to be put into that position, but sometimes it does not work out.

Caesar, like many inspirational people, did not know when to stop. In other words he had too much determination. He wanted to be the man that people would still remember thousands of years after his prime- which he still is. This was the same problem with Michael Jackson. What many people do not know is that Michael Jackson spent all his time trying to be a phenomenon - when he was already one. He spent all his time trying to sell more than his album Thriller – which was number one on all the billboards for 37 weeks. His next album Bad sold about 30 million copies, while Thriller sold about 140 million copies worldwide. That was a huge disappointment to him, while other artists wish they can sell that many albums for their whole career! He wanted to make albums that would sell more than Thriller and become a phenomenon while it already was.

I agree with how Ashley said that being ambitious means you have determination within you, and without it you can't move on with your life. Being ambitious means you have a certain desire to achieve something important to you. Julius Caesar always had that ambitious strive to be successful during his time period. He even sailed east to improve his public speaking to catch his audience's attention.

Like Tiffany said, without having ambition will lead you to get hurt and unsuccessful in life. Several people are still getting laid off and losing their jobs. After people lose their job, they lost that strive to look for a different job. Once he or she's job is taken away, they think that everything they once had is gone. They lose that strive to look for another job and just get hurt along the way.

I agree with Liz when she says that people are driven by accomplishing something meaningful. Most people do not want to live a meaningless life. They usually want to be successful and feel accepted in some way. People do not do things unless they feel it has some important whether it is recognition from someone or to make his or her self proud.
Being ambitious is the desire for achievement or distinction which can be power, fame, honor, or wealth. A person must also have the willingness to attain whatever it is he or she desires. In Casesar's case, he desired power. Being too ambitious can also be bad. Caesar showed this by doing whatever was necessary to gain power. For example, he gave up his own daughter to help him gain the position of consul. Because Caesar was so ambitious, people disliked him. I feel that being too ambitious will always have some implication. If a person wants to achieve good grades, they may abandon their social life so that they can study which is not necessarily a good thing. People can look at what Caesar did and learn that ambition is good but being to ambitious can hurt.

Just like what Ashley and Vivek said, ambition is the driving force in your life to be someone and do something with your life. Without ambition and motivation to do something, I would not do it. I need that push that makes me want to achieve something in my lifetime. Julius Caesar had plenty of this ambition. He wanted to be a big politician in Rome and achieved it mainly because of his ambition. Caesar had the determination to achieve a triumph, by killing 5,000 people. Even though his goals weren't the best to set for yourselves, his ambition and determination still helped him achieve them. Too much ambition isn't that bad either.
Everyone needs that push in their lives to get somewhere. The rising star, Ted Williams, had the ambition and encentive to fix up his life and get back on the right track. Through his ambition and with some help from fate, he ran into the right people and is on his way to bettering his life while staying sober. After his career as a radio station host went down the toilet after his drug abuse, he wanted to get better. His ambition and determination pushed him to stay sober for about a year now so he could get his life back on track, and his story goes to show that ambition is a very valuable characteristic in life if you want to achieve your goals.

I agree with what Ashley stated. Determination is a huge part in being ambitious. If you do not have determination behind any goal you want to accomplish, the goal will not go to it's full potential. Then again I also think that the reasons for being ambitious are also important. The reasons behind the ambition plays a huge part because if the reasons are not important enough you would not have the same passion to accomplish it. The passion behind it very important. Like Abijiah says that most people do not want to live a meaningless life, they want to put forth anything that means alot to them. Everyone wants to be remembered as doing something good or remebered as a great person, but if the passion behind something is not strong enough it affects the ambition to reach a goal.

Like Sabrina stated Caesar was so ambitious to reach his role of being successful that he sailed to the east to improve his speach inorder to attract his audience. If this is not counted as ambition, I dont know what is.

Ambition is a tool used to mostly help, but it can also hurt. Now a days, even after the reccession is over with many people still suffer as a result. Some people that have lost hope to finding another job are the main people that are horribly affected by the reccession. It comes down to who can bring themselves back to the top even after a situation such as the reccession.

Having ambition is having the drive and motivation to accomplish a task. Ambition at one point or another drives all of us towards something we want whether it be a successful life or the new call of duty. Ambition is the fiery passion that burns inside all of us whether we are competing in sports or excelling in school. I agree with Ashley when she says without ambition you will not go anywhere in life. If you do not have the passion for anything you cannot achieve anything. We all need that passion inside us that will fuel us to do what we want to do.

Julius Caesar is a perfect example of someone ambitious. He set his mind to something and did not stop until he finally achieved it. He had the passion and desire to be the best. I think Sabrina brought up an interesting point about traveling to improve his speaking abilities. The fact that he went out of his way to get better shows that he cares and wants to achieve his goal. He has that never give up attitude and by "going the extra mile" that would only improve his chances of success. I like the connection Nick made to the coffee and how too much can be bad. Caesar wanted power no doubt but sometimes ambition can lead to cockiness and conceitedness. He abused his powers and because his ambition and desire was so strong it eventually turned against him. His ambition got the better of him as his lust for power is what causes the senators to turn on him. However, if ambition is used the right way it can be used as fuel to help push towards accomplishing any goal.

Being ambitious means to be brave, successful, smart, and independent. Without ambition, you would most likely be nowhere in life. You would always be playing it safe and never doing what your conscience or gut tells you to. It means to do anything or go to any extent to get where and what you want. Ambition is a part of life that every person needs to have to survive and get through each day. I agree with Dan Gardner, ambition is basically in every little thing that goes on in life. It is in school, sports, and things you want. Some people are more ambitious than others and it completely shows when you look at each of his/her accomplishments.

Julius Caesar was a very ambitious man because he was strong willed and excelled in everything. Whatever he wanted, he received no matter what the task was, he rose to the top. He conquers what he wants and does what he wants. Due to his ambitious actions, he is very successful in the end and that is why we remember him today for the man he was.

Sorry Ms. Depalo but I did not see the Caesar movie so I do not know too much about what write for that part of this response about his rise.

Today, ambition is what causes one man to be better than the next. If not for this, than everyone would be waiting for someone else to make or do something new. I agree with Ashley in saying that without ambition, we as people would get no where. Julius Caesar is the perfect example of an ambitious person. He set his mind on something he wanted, and time after time he went out and achieved those things. At a point Caesar even took the time to go out of his way in order to better his speaking. To much of anything is bad, and this is quite evident when it comes to the ambition of Julius Caesar. His ambition got him to where he wanted to go, but it soon turned to greed just as soon as he got there.

dapo also said...

Just like in Caesar's case, ambition often turns into greed because people always seem to want more no matter how much they have. For example Bernie Madeoff was already a millionaire before the Ponzi scheme, but his greed took over and caused him to commit the crime that he did. Thus landing him in jail. Being ambitious is a good thing, but one must know when to draw the fine line between being ambitious and greedy.

I agree with Danny when he states that, "Having ambition is having the drive and motivation to accomplish a task." Ambition is a feeling that helps you strive to become the best. Usually ambition is there to help you along the way, but it could also take a turn for the worst. Just like Julius Caesar's taking over the Roman Empire made tons of people turn against him. His ambition to kill 5,000 people, a triumph, was fulfilled thanks to his strong ambition.

In the world today, ambition is most commonly found when you need to reach a specific goal. Being a student, each day I see people making that strive to do better. There are people who struggle to complete an assignment, but with their ambition it is made possible. Some people cannot afford schooling past high school, so as they age and can soon afford and have time to take classes to better their future they will do so. This ambition comes from within. It is something that you never give up and no matter the situation it will always be present.

I agree with Cesar in that there is a limit in which ambition goes from being a cause of success to being a destructive monster. Ambition is the greatest motivator; its the desire for something greater. For example, ambition is great in instances where many people do not believe that it is possible for someone to do something, like the effort for an underprivileged student to become valedictorian. Ambition becomes destructive when it blocks people from seeing what else is important in their lives. Caesar was so driven by ambition that basic morals such as respecting others were completely disregarded by him. Many people will make their ambitions a bigger priority than say family, friends, or their values.
Just like every other thing in life, there must always be a balance. Ambition is great because it causes people to reach their goals which they may not have without the drive of ambition. But, no one should have so much ambition that it blinds him or her from everything else that is important.

Ambition is one of the, if not the most important trait you could possibly have. I believe that you can't do anything if you don't have the ambition to do it. Ambition is when you want to do something, prepare yourself to do it, and then actually do it. If I didn't have the ambition to go to a good college and be successful, I wouldn't be coming to school and getting an education and becoming wiser everyday. If Julius Caesar hadn't had the ambition to be ruler of all of Rome, we wouldn't even know he existed. Who would have cared about Julius Caesar if he had just been a regular politician or noble? He would just be ordinary, but Caesar did have that ambition and that is why almost everybody in the world knows his name even 2000 years after he died. Today, I'd say someone with ambition would be any immigrant to America. An immigrant to America has to go through a tremendous amount of struggle to come here and set up a good life for themselves and their family. Yet their ambition to do so leads them to try their hardest and actually do it. Life is never easy, and without ambition, there really is no point in living it. You'll be stuck in poverty and despair for all your life, but an ambition for something better can lead you out of it.

Ambitious is just another work for being better than someone else. Most people try to succeed so that they can show it off, not because of personal glory. This could be a good thing or a bad thing; such as it’s good so that it causes competition, and if there was not any competition there would not be a need to succeed even more. Also, it could be a bad thing, like Dapo said, and people get greedy, people who take their power to a whole different level, where they cheat and lie to get even more power.

In the case of Julius Caesar he did take it a bit too far; he conquered tons of land using. That was his form on being ambitious. He wanted to have a war full life, to become great by defeating other nations. Whether he was right or wrong, he succeeded in his doings. He became what we remember him as today, Julius Caesar, who conquered and succeeded.

Overall the value of being ambitious is to not be a follower, but to lead, to set your better as somebody else, and to make you try to do something to the best of your capabilities.
